Need For Speed Underground 2 takes place in Bayview after the events of Need for Speed: Underground. The prologue begins with the player driving in a Nissan Skyline R34 in Olympic City (though the racing scenes are actually in Bayview), the setting of NFS:UG. He then receives a race challenge from a rather ominous personality who offers him a spot on his crew, but "won't take 'no' for an answer." The player races off — despite Samantha's warnings — only to be ambushed by a mysterious driver in a rage that totals his Skyline. The driver, who has a unique scythe tattoo, makes a call confirming the accident, and the flashback fades out.

Ridge Racer 2 (リッジレーサー2 Rijji Rēsā Tsu?) is a racing arcade game that had been released by Namco in 1994; it runs on their System 22 hardware, and as the name suggests, it is the sequel to Ridge Racer which had been released in the previous year. As with the four Final Lap games, Four Trax (which was only released in Japan) and Suzuka 8 Hours, up to eight players can play simultaneously when four two-player cabinets are linked together - and a player's number determines which of the eight cars he or she shall be driving, because in the original, only the red one affiliated with "Team F/A" is available. The gameplay is very much like that of the original (except for the aforementioned fact that up to eight players can play simultaneously), there are six new songs that can be selected with the gear shifter at the start, the enormous television screen above the entrance to the first tunnel is now playing the game of Galaxian (as in the original, it was playing Mappy), all the billboards are now for earlier Namco games, and there is now a rear-view mirror at the top of the screen (so a player can see other players' or even the CPU-controlled cars coming from behind), as well as a change in daylight from day to night (for when a player drives his, or her, car into the track's tunnel during the day, it will come out of the other end in the night); the game was later followed by a true sequel, Rave Racer, in 1995.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer, known as Shutokō Battle (首都高バトル) in Japan and Tokyo Highway Challenge in Europe, is a racing video game for the Sega Dreamcast. Released in 1999 as one of the console's launch titles, the game was one of the first mission-based racing games. The gameplay involves the player challenging other drivers on the Shuto Expressway in order to gain money to modify and enhance his or her car. The game features a wide variety of Japanese cars and tuning parts to purchase as the player progresses through rivals.

When released in Japan, Shutokō Battle was one of the best selling Dreamcast titles at this time. The game is based on illegal highway racing in Tokyo's Wangan highway with custom tuned cars. A such phenomenon is growing popular in Japan since the 90's with its dedicated manga (Shutokō Battle's biggest inspiration being Wangan Midnight), anime series and video games (C1 Circuit, Wangan Trial, Naniwa Wangan Battle).
