PlayStation 2 doesn't have the atemporal masterpieces of SNES, and didn't start mythical sagas like NES or PSX. It also doesn't have the indie games and online games like PS3 or XBOX360.
However, in my opinion, it has more masterpieces, more masterpieces/excellent games, than any of those.
This list wants to prove that.
1.Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Not my favourite game of the saga, but an incredible good sequel.
One of these rare exceptions that it's not the same game repeated. Also, an amazing story.
2.Silent Hill 3 (2003)
Crappier story, you can't enjoy it completly unless you played the first game, only three endings...
... but the scariest game of the saga. And the best character.
3.Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004)
Completly different from the other three. You either love it, or hate it.
The last great game of the franchise.
Team ICO. ICO. Nuff Said.
5.Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
Team ICO. Shadow of the Colossus. Come on, you don't know why this game it is here?
Nice atmosphere, and one of the PS2's graphic beasts.
6.Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001)
Classic 3D Platformer. Nuff said v2.0
7.Jak II (2003)
Maybe it is surprising for any you, but it's my list so here it is.
Basically, GTA mixed with fantasy mixed with platformer. It is better than it sounds, but way different than the original.
8.Final Fantasy X (2001)
The last Final Fantasy made by Squaresoft.
9.Final Fantasy XII (2006)
Bad story, but a huge world, many sidequests, amazing places and overall really ambitious.
Another of PS2's graphic beasts.
10.Kingdom Hearts (2002)
Action RPG with Disney Worlds and Final Fantasy guest cameos.
As good as crazy its premise.
11.Kingdom Hearts II (2005)
It isn't as good as the first one, but the combat system is sure addicting and improved.
12.Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Looking back, and knowing that in no way this is a horror game, Resident Evil 4 has its own charm and charisma. Too bad they exploited the formula too much with the next ones.
Also, most accurate description of Spain ever.
13.God of War (2005)
Legend of Zelda meets Gore and adult rating meets Greek mythology.
14.God of War II (2007)
More bosses, more awesome story, more finishers, more awensome graphics, more gigantic beasts.
One of those perfect sequels that appear once in a while.
15.Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 (2004)
The best Dragon ball for ps2 with 2D fights...
16.Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (2007)
... and the best one with the new system. The definitive dragon ball game, the one that has the most playable characters of them all.
17.SoulCalibur III (2005)
Well, we needed some fighting games here!
Great set of characters and no DLCs. Soul Calibur at its best.
18.Tekken 5 (2004)
Same of the above, but with martial arts.
Also, it is a Tekken. And Playstation. Of course at least one Tekken needed to be here.
19.Haunting Ground (2005)
Clock Tower, but even better.
Creppy overpowered stalkers and cliched scenearios greatly detailed. It isn't Silent Hill or Project Zero, but sure it is enjoyable.
Also, it has the most AWESOME DOG EVER.
P.S. If the chick annoys you, that's normal, don't worry. Think that AT LEAST makes some sense she's that scared, due to the conditions she's in. Maybe it helps in the immersion.
20.Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
Ladies and gentlemen, wellcome to the game who started the Sandbox genre.
21.Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)
Ladies and gentlemen, wellcome to the game which perfectioned the ideas of GTAIII. Also awesome atmosphere.
22.Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
Come on, do I really need to explain this one?
Siren it is not a masterpiece per se, at least compared with the other big PS2 Survival horror games. But I liked to show as many games of this genre as possible, since we have so little now, at least in consoles.
Also, the guy who made the original Silent Hill is in. That means something.
Also, it is fucking hard. But it has an easier PS3 remake!
24.Forbidden Siren 2 (2006)
Forbidden Siren overpowered. More enemies, more characters, more scenarios, more new mechanics. A rare exception of a better sequel.
25.Fatal Frame (2001)
Fatal Frame, the saga that can fight (and even beat) Silent Hill as the king of Survival Horror genre. Nuff said.
Here with more Resident Evil mechanics. As insane as it sounds.
